During the one-upsmanship days of the cold war, one of the items that the Soviets
pointed to with pride was the Moscow Metro (subway) system. Under Stalin the Metro
was intended to be not only an transportation medium, but one for propaganda as well.
Called "Palaces of the People" no expense was to be spared as the system
was begun in 1935. Sculptures, mosaics, ornate moldings, bronze, mahongany, granite
and marble, are but a few of the design elements and materials used as the Soviets
built an impressive mass transit system.
L&B saw a small portion of the Moscow Metro on a trip from their hotel near the
Kitai-Gorod Metro station to the Pushkinskaya shopping area. |
