It is estimated that half of the
world's population subsists, to some degree, on rice. Two countries, China and India,
contain roughly one-third of the worlds population and grow over half the world's
rice.

Here, in areas surrounding Guilin, you can see rice paddy after rice paddy. As we
drove up the mountain to the village of Lonshan and looked between bamboo trees you
could see countless terraced fields of flooded rice and start to get a sense of the
180 million metric tons of China’s annual rice production (1992
World Almanac).
